Heartworm Testing

Heartworm is extremely dangerous for your pet. These parasites are spread through insect bites and can grow as long as 30 cm. Although they're not very common in Québec, there'll still a risk, so it's important to protect your pet.

What are heartworms?

Heartworms are long, flat, white worms. They pose a serious risk to your pet because they reproduce in the pulmonary arteries and heart chambers. These parasites are very difficult to remove because of where they're located and can be fatal in very large numbers.

How can I tell if my pet has heartworm?

Unfortunately, there are no visible signs of heartworm. The only time you'll usually see symptoms is when the worms have multiplied. If you notice that your pet is very tired, losing weight, coughing or having difficulty breathing, contact our clinic as soon as possible.

How can heartworm be prevented?

The best solution is to use preventive treatments that destroy the larvae and stop them from developing and reproducing. Treatment is available for pets with heartworm, but it's very taxing for them and results aren't guaranteed.
